Jane's journey to law began with a diverse background in chemistry, philosophy, and laboratory work at the University of Otago while raising her first son alone.  Jane was drawn to law for its blend of problem-solving, language, and strategic thinking, Jane found her niche in property law, a field that allows her to combine her skills in contracts and problem-solving.  Jane joined Downie Stewart in 2005 before moving to Auckland for 8 years where she practised commercial and property law, specialising in unit title development and large scale subdivision work.  Jane has worked in most areas of property law, from residential and commercial conveyancing, leasing and unit title redevelopments, to trust formation and administration, and estate planning.

Jane is a member of the New Zealand Law Society Property Law Transactions Subcommittee, a nationwide group of lawyers who advise lawyers on issues relating to property transactions.  Jane is also a director of NZ Law, a nationwide affiliation of law firms, where Jane’s portfolio is staff training and education.  Jane organises national conferences and regularly presents at these on matters such as GST treatment in land transactions, subdivisions, and adverse possession and abandoned land claims. 

At Downie Stewart, Jane's passion lies in meeting clients, understanding their needs, and guiding them clearly through legal complexities. Her expertise in property law extends to averse possession claims, road stopping and advising on rights arising under easements and other registered interests.

Beyond her legal pursuits, Jane cherishes family time with her three children, enjoying travel, swimming, movies, and gatherings with friends and extended family. She is completing a large home renovation and can be seen with a paintbrush occasionally.  Jane also enjoys squash, walking, and diving into podcasts and audiobooks, particularly those about science, aviation, and true forensic stories.
